Surname does not populate in Moodle

When a new user registers for an account in the Joomla front-end only the first name carries over to Moodle. So when the user enters the Moodle area they are prompted to enter in the Surname as it is a required field. Is this by design?

Where is the surname entered? Joomla does not have a place for surname unless you are using CB, jomsocial, VM, some other extension or the joomla profile plugin.

If you are using one of these you need to map the fields in joomdle so it knows to pass the info to moodle.
